90's Special

Unpop are very excited to announce that we will be continuing our series of decades-specific indiepop nights with the next chronologically predictable choice, a 90s special!

We are returning to the lovely West End Bowling Club for dancing, cake, fun times and, of course, their scandalously cheap bar. We will be playing only tunes released between 1990 and 1999, though, as some of you may have spotted at our 80s special, the rules can be slightly bent when singles were released in different decades from albums and so on and so forth.

Despite it being a 90s special, we are not anticipating suddenly discovering a hitherto undiscovered passion for Madchester, happy hardcore or even necessarily all the Britpop hits, so sorry to disappoint if anyone was hoping for that. If you like Ash, Pulp, Belle and Sebastian, Bis, Sleater Kinney, Kenickie, Pavement, Sleeper, Elastica, The Fall, The Delgados, Hefner, Helen Love, The Aislers Set, Heavenly, Sonic Youth, Le Tigre, Silver Jews, Idlewild, Super Furry Animals, The Breeders and that kind of thing, then you'll be in luck though. It is possible we may play a tiny bit of Blur too, I think, on reflection.

Unop's 80's Indiepop Special

The West End Bowling Club
Friday 30th November
8pm - 1am £4.00

Edinburgh's premier indiepop dance party has been on hiatus for some time, but Team Unpop are very excited to be back with the first of a series of decade-specific specials, starting with... the eighties!

Expect the usual Unpop vibes, but only playing tunes released from 1980 to 1989. We are thrilled to be back at the West End Bowling Club, a lovely little dancefloor with a scandalously cheap bar. Badges, cakes and mixtapes will be free on the door and we hope you can come!

Disclaimer: we will be playing The Smiths, on the basis that Morrissey wasn't quite such a nob in the eighties. We in no way, shape or form endorse 2018 Morrissey though, just to be clear.

5th Birthday Party!

5th Birthday Indiepop Dance Party Extravaganza!

Friday 17th of October
11pm to 3am

£5
Mixtapes, badges and cake for early arrivals.

The Wee Red Bar
Edinburgh College of Art
Lauriston Place
Edinburgh
EH3 9DF

Since our mildly auspicious beginnings in October 2009, Unpop has developed into quite a fixture of the Edinburgh music scene. Since then, we've had some fantastic guest dj sets from the likes of Pat Nevin, Withered Hand and the Edinburgh Man, put on a plethora of gigs and released a handful of tapes by Edinburgh's stupendous indie poppers The Spook School, the just brilliant Just Joans and the crazily good Coach Longlegs. Most of all, we've been engaged participants in the struggle for FUN.

Unpop's gone on tour too. We've had some excellent times dj-ing at Indietracks festival in Derbyshire, Popklubb in Newcastle, Scared To Dance and HDIF in London, and Kaffibarrinn in Reykjavik. We've also put on some indie pop dance parties in fair Glasgow.

However, Edinburgh is still its home, and our night is inextricably linked with the art school environs of the Wee Red (as well as the obligatory after party at Adam's flat in deepest, darkest Morningside...).

Come down for our 5th birthday party, where the obligatory cakes, sweets, tapes and general awesomeness awaits. Party on! Expect to hear Expect to hear the likes of: Felt, Hefner, Orange Juice, Deerhoof, Camera Obscura, Jens Lekman, The Pastels, Tullycraft, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Pavement, Talulah Gosh, A Smile And A Ribbon, The Magnetic Fields, Neutral Milk Hotel, Bearsuit, Los Campesinos! Vivian Girls, Bis, The Smiths, Ballboy, Kenickie, Helen Love, The Bobby McGees, The Hidden Cameras.

Wear your heart on your sleeve and shoes you can shimmy in. The fey will rise again!

Unpop with guest DJ Withered Hand

Unpop are very excited to be back at the Wee Red Bar on August 15th! Yes it's the festival, yes there will be many confused people at our club who wander in by accident, mistaking us for fringe venue 286 and our super blend of indiepop, indiepop and more indiepop for an experimental interpretative dance installation. Or something.

https://www.facebook.com/events/811731668851119

However, there will still be free mixtapes, free badges, free sweets and possibly even cake. There will still be dancing and we will still endeavour to play all the ace indiepop songs you care to request.

We are even more thrilled to announce our superstar guest DJ for the night, Withered Hand! Our very favourite local purveyor of songs about self abuse on futons, Dan is taking a night off from international indie stardom to come and spin some discs for us at the Wee Red.

Some of us have been listening to New Gods on repeat play quite a lot this year and as such we can't quite fully express how excited we are about this. We're not sure quite what to expect, except that it's likely to be brilliant. So whether you're a familiar face at unpop or a visitor up in town on your jollies, we do hope you'll come and cut a rug with us.

Valentines Special 2014

Friday 14th of Febuary

The Wee Red Bar
Edinburgh Art College,
Lauriston Place
Edinburgh EH3 9DF

11pm to 3am - £4 entry

Guest DJ - Edinburgh Man
edinburghman.com

After seeing out 2013 in ruinously drunken style at How Does It Feel To Be Loved in London, Team Unpop return home to the Wee Red Bar for our first night of 2014. This year what has come to be our annual Valentine's/ Anti-Valentine's Bop is going to actually fall for the first time on the big day itself, Friday 14th February!

After romancing your date over dinner, where better to take him or her than for a night of crazed indiepop dancing afterwards? Seduction is 100% guaranteed with a selection of our most sexual records. Plus there will be cake.

Alternatively, if you happen to be dateless this Valentine's, come and dance with other similarly hot and single/ disenchanted and cynical local indiekids. There will be mildly offensive biscuits and balloons and excellent anti-romantic tunes and it sure beats staying in in your pyjamas and being all pathetically Bridget Jones about the whole thing, doesn't it?

We certainly like to think so anyway.

Unpop Mixtapes and badges for the first 50 people!

Expect to hear the likes of Belle & Sebastian, Felt, Hefner, The Clean, Orange Juice, Kenickie, Jens Lekman, 'Allo Darlin', Tullycraft, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Pavement, Talulah Gosh, Plastic Bertrand, The Aislers Set, A Smile And A Ribbon, The Gingham Mittens, The Magnetic Fields, The Pastels, 'Everywhere', Bearsuit, Los Campesinos!, Eux Autres, Standard Fare, Bis, The Smiths, ballboy, Helen Love, The Spook School, Pulp, The Bobby McGees, The Hidden Cameras and many, many more.

Wear your heart on your sleeve and shoes you can shimmy in and we'll look forward to seeing you there!

Coach Longlegs cassette release!

Unpop's latest cassette Coach Longlegs - No Dogs At Shows is released on Saturday the 14th of December 2013!

In their own words "Coach Longlegs is an emphasis on positive attitudes, friendship over musicianship. We want everyone to feel loose and feel relaxed as a way of feeling motivated and inspired. We want people to feel like they could play in a band too."

They mix indie powerpop, classic north american lofi sounds and a positive punk attitude. From St John's, Newfoundland they focus on having fun, playing shows and making music videos instead of releasing records and playing to the industry PR games

A limited run of 50 copies is available at http://unpoptapes.bandcamp.com/album/no-dogs-at-shows

Unpop Dance Party - 10pm to 3am

Whole evening of fun for only £4! (£5 on the door at the gig)
Tickets available at http://www.wegottickets.com/event/241248

The nights are drawing in, there's a chill in the air and Team Unpop are getting ready for their 4th birthday indiepop dance party!

We are super stoked to be putting on none other than The Flatmates to mark this occasion! Heroes of The Subway Organization, The Flatmates were making scuzzy punky pop hits while we were still in nappies and broke up before we were in long trousers, but we still obsessed over their old 7" singles when we were in high school and certainly never dreamt that we would get to see them play live, let alone put them on at the Wee Red.

Yet this year has seen the band reform and, having ventured south to get a sneak peek at what they look like in action at the Nottingham Pop Alldayer in September, we can promise you that you are in for a real treat seeing these guys.

Sharing the bill with them will be Edinbugh's very own indiepop superstars, The Spook School, who will have launched their shiny new Fortuna Pop! album just the week before they grace the stage at unpop. They are so hott right now and, more importantly, a ton of fun. Support also comes from Edinburgh kids Thank You So Nice.

As usual there will be indiepop dance mayhem until 3am after the bands, plus free mixtapes, badges, cakes and balloons. We know what we like and we're not about to start messing with the formula. Eff us, we're twee.

Hope you can make it on October 18th!

Summer Unpop with The Just Joans, Middle Ones and Gums

Friday 16th of August

Live sets from
The Just Joans
Middle Ones
Gums

The Wee Red Bar

Bands 7pm to 10pm,
Unpop 10pm to 3am

Mixtapes and badges for the most enthusiastic dancers!!

We are thrilled to be welcoming back Unpop favourites The Just Joans to The Wee Red Bar to headline a very exciting bill on the 16th August.

Ever since we first got our grubby mitts on a copy of Last Tango In Motherwell back in the heady days of 2005, we have been a bit in love with The Just Joans’ particular brand of gloomy, angsty indiepop. Their songs about coming of age in the 1990s in Lanarkshire are underscored by a self-aware, wry humour that balances out the inherent misery of the subject matter and makes for surprising sing-along material.

Following on from last year’s excellent LP, Buckfast Bottles In The Rain, we understand they have just finished recording a new EP and so are looking forward to hearing what they’ve got up their sleeves for us.

Support comes from awesome Bristol/Norwich-based The Middle Ones and also from GUMS, who, making EPs called things like “Antipathy” and also hailing from the West of Scotland, are perhaps in some ways musical heirs to The Just Joans.

Unpop will be playing non-stop indiepop after the bands until 3am and all this we offer you for the mere sum of £4. It might be the middle of the festival, but this is the only place you want to be on this date, believe us.

Friday 7 June 2013

Unpop Tapes!!

Unpop is delighted two tapes. Featuring the live recordings or an Unpop gig last year.

Both are recorded on stupidly high quality chrome tape.

Only £3 and limited to 40 copies each.

The Just Joans Tape

The Just Joans are one of the most underrated bands in Scotland, producing songs that are (in equal part) maudlin and hilarious. Yet their idiosyncratic lyrical/musical vision - fusing elements of The Smiths, Arab Strap with a distinct attachment to indie pop/twee music - has made them into a cult band with a following that extends internationally, far beyond their roots in Motherwell, North Lanarkshire.

2012 debut vinyl LP release Buckfast Bottles In The Rain is a brilliant distillation of their vision, encompassing love, regret, poignancy and hope in pop-song format. Essentially, all the good stuff.

This limited edition Unpop tape documents a headline gig that the band played at the Wee Red Bar in Edinburgh to launch their record on June 16th 2012. Appropriately enough for a Scottish summer, the rain poured all evening long. The recording features classic Just Joans songs like 'Hey Boy, You're Oh So Sensitive', and 'What Do We Do Now?', as well as the dialogue between Just Joans singer David Pope and an irate, drunken cyclist.

The Spook School Tape

The Spook School are a young, hungry Edinburgh band with something to prove. They are four hip indie gun-slingers with a raucous attitude and mean chops. The Spook School will annoy your parents, and may well chuck your VCR out the upstairs window of your house.

Actually, none of this is true. The Spook School are - in fact - a largely wholesome, friendly and decent group of folks (apart from their reprobate drummer). After wowing the Indietracks festival audience last summer with a rough-hewn set of scuzzy but sensitive indie pop in the sunshine, this Edinburgh quartet have gone from strength to strength. Newly signed to London pop's quintessential record label Fortuna (home to Allo Darlin', Herman Dune and many other legends), they will be putting out their debut LP later this year.

In the meantime, there's this tape. Recorded at their gig supporting The Just Joans in June 16th, this limited edition release documents a band in rough, exuberant form, with 'History', 'Camerman' and 'Devil Of Mine' highlights. It also documents the 'unique' banter of drummer Niall.

Guest DJ's at How Does It Feel To Be Loved!!!

Team Unpop are very excited indeed to be guest-DJing at How Does It Feel To Be Loved in London!

Friday the 7th of June!
Canterbury Arms, London
8 Canterbury Crescent, Brixton, SW9 7QD,

London, 9pm-2.30am, map of the venue is here
£4 members, £6 non members. Membership is free! Register here.

HDIF is a night that has served as an inspiration for us; we love what they do and we are very honoured to be a part of the night at the Canterbury Arms on the 7th June.

So, if you are an unpopper in London, be sure to come along and say hi. We will be tearing up the dancefloor with a pure indiepop set alongside Ian's mix of indiepop, northern soul, tamla motown, girl groups and sixties heartbreak. There will be so much shimmying, we're giddy just thinking about it already!

Besides which, if you are one of the first fifty folk through the door, there will be free unpop mixtapes and badges for you. What more could you really wish for?

The Spook School

Unpop are very excited to bring you a night of awesome indiepop from Edinburgh's very own The Spook School!

Newly signed to Fortuna Pop! and hotly anticipated to do great things, they have been variously described as "particularly cute and particularly addictive", "catchy as hell" and as being the way "you always want Belle and Sebastian to sound like, but they never do" (whatever the chuff THAT means).

In any case, if you like intelligent raucous noisy indiepop and you aren't afraid of topless moustachioed drummers propositioning you, you should come and see for yourself quite why this superb little band have stirred up such an ardent following for themselves over the past few months.

Support comes from The Occasional Flickers and Colin's Godson and all in all it should be an excellent evening. We look forward to seeing you there.

Only £4.00

Includes free entry to the Egg afterwards where Unpop will be the guest DJ's.
